Usually scheduled close to February 14, the Paper
Hearts Workshop celebrates either Valentine’s Day or Single Awareness Day,
depending on your status or interests. This gala event is sponsored by the
Library, Writing Center, and Madonna Pen, our campus writing group.
There was no dearth of prizes—the best the Dollar
Store had to offer: Heart-covered socks and ties, Valentine-shaped sunglasses,
water bottles, a pink Slinky, and a $25 Barnes & Noble gift certificate.

On that February 13, in the Take 5 Lounge, we worked
earnestly with students on their academic research and writing. Students also
wrote a bit of nonsense, either in response to our prompts or as part of our
round-robin stories. Although we typically discourage nonsense in academia, a
little nonsense on the side can lighten moods, relieve anxiety, and remind
students that learning is not all drudgery.
